- On Feb. 12, Brooklyn celebrated New York City couples who have been married 50 years or more, and I dropped by the El Caribe restaurant, where the luncheon was held, to ask the celebrated sweethearts how they breathed life into a relationship after all these years. After all, we were always told to learn from our elders, and what better lesson can we learn than that of love? - "Cabin fever" isn't a technical medical term, but when Silver Spring-based psychologist Laurel Fay returns to the office next week, she expects to treat plenty of snow-weary patients for its mental side effects. "It's a breeding ground for family conflict," said Fay, a licensed marriage and family therapist. "What exacerbates it now is the feeling that you can't get out." - Men who have sex at least twice a week can almost halve their risk of heart disease, according to new research.
It shows men who indulge in regular lovemaking are up to 45 percent less likely to develop life-threatening heart conditions. The study, of over 1,000 men, did not examine whether women benefit too.
The researchers who carried out the investigation are calling for doctors to screen men for sexual activity when assessing their risk of heart disease. - Conventional wisdom has always held that children suffer when parents argue, but one study has found that it might actually be good for children to see their parents argue if the disagreement is resolved the right way. - While some counselors focus on the behavior of an individual, marriage and family therapists go a step further, addressing mental-health issues within the context of the family. By counseling couples, families, or individuals, marriage and family therapists can tackle a host of problems: adult schizophrenia, substance abuse, anorexia, and marital conflict. Today, marriage and family therapy is considered a "core" mental-health profession, alongside social work, psychiatric nursing, psychology, and psychiatry. More than 1.8 million people are currently receiving treatment from a marriage and family therapist.
